In the far-flung outreaches of West County, Sonoma, you’ll find a little village called Freestone, so small if you were to blink while driving through, you’d certainly miss it. But that would be a great shame as it’s home to one of the best bakeries in the North Bay: Wild Flour Bread. Built around a wood fired brick oven, Wild Flour has earned a well-deserved reputation over the past 16 years, for its breads, hearty sweet and savory pastries and flat breads. And to my delight, there’s usually a gluten-free daily option too.
Housed in a rustic, wooden building, just along the main road, and flanked by a gorgeously, abundant vegetable garden, where much of the produce that fills its breads and pastries is grown, Wild Flour is a welcoming, homey place. You’ll often find groups of motorcyclists and bicyclists gathered outside, happy to find a place to refuel during a day’s ride.
After mulling the myriad of choices on the blackboard and tasting a few of the many samples on offer, Monkey and I settled on sharing a gigantic rhubarb, gluten-free scone ($4.25) which was delicious and didn’t last long. Looking past the counter we saw bakers hard at work, kneading what seemed to be the largest amounts of dough I’ve ever laid eyes on – 30 kilos to be precise. On this occasion, sticky buns were in the works involving a mere 18lbs of sugar and 8lbs of butter.
Breads are priced upwards from $6.50, scones are $4.25 and biscotti are $3.25. Coffee, tea and other drinks are also offered. Warning: don’t visit Wild Flour Bread if you’re watching what you eat or are only mildly hungry… portions are large and the goods are so delicious you won’t be able to restrain yourself.
