The best way to approach Petersham Nurseries – an actual place to buy plants, have tea, browse wonderfully curated household objets and eat a delicious lunch – is along the river from Richmond-upon-Thames.
We were treated to the typical British experience, i.e. bloody awful weather – or as the saying goes “nice weather for ducks”. And said ducks certainly seemed to be enjoying the newly-formed lakes in the pastures alongside the stormy muddy Thames.
Barbour wax jackets and Hunter wellies are de rigeur between the months of November to April n the U.K.. Fortunately we had the foresight to pack our own.
Having stuffed our faces with a super delicious three course meal in the wonderful Petersham Nurseries Cafe – you can read all about it here -we browsed around the gorgeous shop next door.
Located in a humid glasshouse with hard mud flloors, and lit surprisingly by crystal chandeliers and string lights, this is a veritable treasure trove. From beautiful glassware, to pretty porcelain dishes and earthenware pottery. Cashmere rugs adorn the walls and pretty violets are in bloom.
Art painted on glass in a shabby chic frame, and beautiful greetings cards on thick parchment card, are what I choose to bring home with me.
The Shop is well worth the visit, and you can walk just a few hundred more yards to visit the impressive Ham House from here.
Petersham Nurseries is at Church Lane, Off Petersham Road, Richmond, Surrey, TW10 7AB
